1. FOR ME: As a high school English teacher, I have been on an unfortunate drought of reading for my own pleasure. I brought this book to my English department white elephant exchange (so did someone else) and ended up trading up for my own book (Where The Crawdads Sing) in the end to read over Winter Break.
This was a perfect fast paced read with a complex, lovable main character. With a small town murder and an eccentric Marsh Girl, the plot moves quickly through a series of events that stretches the reader’s mind into unknown beautiful swampy lands and creates questions about the evilness and also kindness of the human race. The unexpected ending left me curious about the author’s commentary on the power of relationships between humans. This is truly one of the best books I read in 2019!

2. FOR THE FAM: This favorite is picked because of its proximity to me and isn’t as accessible to everyone as it is to me (it’s one block from our house), but the local YMCA has truly been a lifesaver in my families’ life over the past few years. Having small children comes with a variety of difficulties and finding time to workout whether you stay at home or work is near impossible, but the Y has provided a clean, safe, friendly staff for my boys (1 & 3) to go to while my husband and I work out several days a week for no additional cost with flexible morning and evening hours Monday through Saturday. Before we were members of the Y, we were fans of more boutique workouts that did not have the flexibility of childcare, and if it was available it was expensive on top of the already high price of the workout. The Y has given us a balance of affordable and convenient, but with a great variety of classes that both my husband and I enjoy together. Not only are we happier parents, my 3 year old son has also been enrolled for almost two and half straight years of swim lessons (for a discounted additional price)! We will be pool ready!

3. FOR THE KIDS: My 3 year old developed a strong addiction for puzzles in November; he is obsessed! Of course, his Christmas gifts were pretty much puzzles from us, Santa, and all grandparents. We have been through about 4-5 other brands in the last two months, and the best ones are the Ravensburger brand. They have a large selection of Disney that can be suitable for any age plus many other themes suitable for any gender and obsession. This 3-puzzle box has small pictures that can easily be put in a plastic bag with pieces to bring along in the diaper bag/purse for a quick ,desperate activity. The puzzles are easy for his small hands to manipulate together but do not fall apart easily. They are perfect for any little puzzle addict!
