Fabric Artwork

It isn’t surprising that I love to decorate my home in fabric since my mom owns a Kansas City quilt store. I find that regardless of my easy access to fabric, it really is much more affordable to decorate with than the typical artwork, and matching fabric allows for so many options. The first time I did this was right when we moved in, and I was at a loss of how to decorate my green kitchen quickly and affordably for a temporary time (apparently I liked it so much, I never changed it).

This time, I had been working on a quilt (and still am working on it) with adorable fabric panels for my older son’s “big boy” room. I immediately knew when I saw the fabric that it would be on the walls too! Even though the quilt is not done and my son’s been in the room for 18 months, the fabric is up to decorate while I continue to work on the quilt.

How to Create Your Own Fabric Artwork:

  1. Find some fabric and a frame that you love and matches with the look you are going for.
  1. Iron the fabric well – I used my temporary (smaller) iron for this and Mary Ellen’s Best Press

3. Use the glass or plastic and center it over what you want seen in the frame (I just eyeball it but measuring always works too) – I use a regular pencil or fabric chalk to trace around it.

4. Trim right on the traced line – excess fabric will not allow it to lay flat in the frame.

5. For this white fabric, I had to line the back of the frame with another white paper (or packaging paper inside of frame if light colored).

6. I use regular scotch tape to do this and put a circle of tape in all corners and half way between on the frame back or in this case the white paper (already secured with scotch tape to the frame back).

7. Lay the fabric on top of the tape and secure from middle out to the sides – be sure here that all frame mounting hooks are aligned based on the design and how it is desired to be mounted.

8. Put frame together based on instructions – I notice with white that I had to carefully make sure all threads and dust were wiped off the fabric before framing.

9. Enjoy and keep the love of fabric throughout your home!

Salad Dressing Shaker

NorPro Measuring Shaker

For Us: Ever since having my mom’s homemade dressings, I can not have a salad without a homemade dressing (see my Honey Sriracha Vinaigrette post). This measuring shaker comes in handy for measuring the liquid ingredients as well as storing the dressing for the week on the counter or in the fridge. It is not spill proof for traveling, but when I want to take a salad to work, I just toss it into a ziplock bag so it won’t leak on my lunch box.

Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine

For the Kids: Fair enough. This one is for us too. I can’t say that this has been a complete fix to a very frustrating 6 months of my 3 year old sleeping on our floor, but for the last week it has helped my son sleep in his bed for the majority of the night (2 full nights and 3 with only one redirect). We paired this new sound machine with a new full bed. Each night, F and I pick out a color and sound for the night. He understands that he can only pick it out if he stays in bed until the light comes off. Tonight, he even knew that “rainbow is not an option.” I have not used the timers yet because I am utilizing it as a reward for him now, but make sure that I reiterate he can not get out of bed until it is off. Luckily, we can turn it off before we wake him up for school, and he is ecstatic he stayed in bed all night. Still crossing my fingers this continues to work.

Thought Sauce Podcast

Thought Sauce Podcast

For Me: I have mentioned before that I love a great podcast and especially one that is entertaining but also relevant to my own life. These two best friends from college (that now live across the country from one another) typically interview a guest that is notable or specializes in something relevant to being an entrepreneur and/or a working parent. The wide range of guests they have already interviewed on this podcast is amazing. I love the natural conversation that occurs and entertains me as I fold laundry. I now never have enough laundry!

Honey Sriracha Vinaigrette

This dressing is a MoJo household staple. I always have a container ready for a quick side salad or even an entree salad that my husband and I have at least once a week (I’ll share that salad below). If you might be scared away by the thought of a spicy dressing, you can certainly hold back on sriracha, but I made this for 4 other couples on New Years Eve, and it was suitable for all. Not kid tested; my kid “hates salad”.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 T honey
  • 1 T sriracha
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic (minced if available)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
Norpro Measuring Shaker

The most vital part of the simplicity of this dressing is the measuring shaker. I keep the dressing in it for a week and re-shake before each use.

Instructions:

  1. Measure all ingredients into the shaker
  2. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds
  3. Taste to desire – add more or less sriracha best on spice level desired

MoJo House Salad:

  • Mixed greens
  • Oven roasted brussel sprouts
  • Blueberries (Craisins if not in season, or cheap)
  • Feta cheese
  • Cashews (we love the coconut encrusted ones from Trader Joes)
  • Rotisserie chicken (we pull the Costco rotisserie chicken every week for easy prep during busy weeks)

Valentines Day Edition

Tomorrow marks what some might criticize as the “Hallmark” holiday, and although my expectations are low from my husband (he hates the holiday), and we don’t go all out, I certainly love to celebrate any holiday spoiling and decking my boys out. After I picked my Valentines Three, I realized they all had to do with my kids, which is our reality!

Valentines Books

Amazon

For the Kids: My mom gave us this book at the beginning of the week, originally for my 15 month old, but both boys have wanted to read this book over and over this week. I like that it brings some holiday spirit out early, so we can discuss and explain the importance of the upcoming day. We do this with Christmas and Halloween books, but I can’t wait to continue to do this throughout the year with other holidays that I want to teach my boys about, like St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, and so many more!

Valentines Graphic Tees

For the Kids: Unfortunately, this is not the shirt I picked up in the stores last week for my boys, but this one is just as cute! The price was low last week in store, but WOW $1.97 for them the day before? It makes me want to stock up for next year, even with the risk of forgetting or the size being incorrect. I jump on any excuse to match my boys, and I love the unique designs of Old Navy.

Homemade Class Valentines

Amazon Stamps & Amazon Stickers

For the Kids: Disclaimer – these do not compare to the “cuteness” of some store bought Valentines, but I love the process! This is Frank’s 4th Valentines Class Party (benefits of full-time daycare), and I have truly enjoyed coming up with something every year that is unique to what he, and now George, currently like. I certainly don’t turn my nose up to those that give candy, but I feel like holidays have enough treats involved that something to entertain my kids is needed after all that sugar; stamps and stickers it is this year! This year, Frank helped me decorate his for the first time. I was tempted to write some Valentine/Car pun on his, but wanted to make his more authentic as he is getting older and can take more ownership and pride for them. I look forward to this tradition of making our own Valentines in years to come!

The Thursday Three – February 6

Kansas City Addition

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl this week, so our city is electric! Schools closed for a Red Snow Day, so the city could celebrate at the parade together. This week’s celebrations are reminders of why this city is amazing!
Here are a few of my favorite Kansas City favorites!

Boulevard Brewery

For Us: This local brewery’s beer is found across the nation now, and we know why! Not only is their Boulevard Wheat (the Hazy American Classic) a staple in your household, but their innovative new brews keep locals checking out their latest at our local liquor store. They just launch their Fling Cocktail series and like all their products it is a beer twist on everyone’s favorite cocktails; think Blood Orange Vodka Soda, Cucumber Lime Gin & Tonic, Mai Tai, and so many more!

Minsky’s Pizza

For the Family: A weekly stop for our family! Pizza is great for the family but having a dine in restaurant in our neighborhood has been a lifesaver. The table are covered with white paper for the kids to draw on; my son helps himself to the crayon drawer for this fun entertainment option. The pizza is great and the weekly special help us mix it up, but I can never leave without our regular Philly Cheesesteak pizza. Not only do they have regular and gourmet pizzas, they also have a plethora of appetizers, salads, pastas, and calzones. We are creatures of habit and probably need to venture out on their menu.

Royals Games

KC Royals

For the Family: Although the Chiefs just left our city feeling more pride than we have felt since the Royals won the World Series in 2015 (pre-kids), I have to admit that my kids have never been to a Chiefs game, BUT we are avid baseball game attendees. One of our favorite summer activities are to pack up the boys and head out to the ballpark! Since having our first son, we still attend 5 or 6 games a season and enjoy *almost* every moment. No games are never the same as they used to be, but with enough snacks packed and weather appropriate clothing we truly enjoy our time out at the ballpark as a family!

The Thursday Three – January 30

ROAD TRIP STYLE

Magnet Drawing Doodle Board

AMAZON

FOR THE KIDS: I have yet to find a great board where my 3 year old can actually use crayons or markers in the car effectively, but this magnetic drawing board is perfect for the car and keeps my son occupied for a solid 30 minutes to an hour. The smaller one was not quite suitable for my 15 month old yet; he hasn’t quite mastered holding a writing utensil. I use Melissa & Dougs Water Wow Books with him but use a wipe instead of the pen.

Stickers

AMAZON

FOR THE KIDS: Again this one is for my 3 year old. This particular pack (which is his favorite Disney movie) has 3 sheets of stickers. I make sure I bring some paper for him to put them on, but sometimes they end up on the car. I figure it’s not the end of the world, and I can clean them off later. We made a mural on the back of the seat that occupied him for at least an hour. Beware: you may find stickers all over them at a bathroom break.

The Cold Podcast

The Cold Podcast

FOR ME: I have not finished this particular podcast but am LOVING it so far! It is a crime podcast that explores the untold story about the disappearance of Susan Powell. It has incredible audio content from her and her husband’s audio journals as well as very relevant interviews. There are many great crime podcasts out there that help to occupy the the rarity of nap time and most popular iPad time. My favorite documentary podcasts are Dirty John (one of my all time favorites), Serial, and Up & Vanished. When it’s dark and the kids are asleep: my favorite of a road trip.

The Thursday Three – January 23

Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

https://www.amazon.com/Poet-X-Elizabeth-Acevedo/dp/0062662805/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=poet+x&qid=1579658536&sr=8-1

For Teens: As a high school English teacher, I do read Young Adult literature frequently to be able to recommend novels to my students. I originally picked this book up after Elizabeth Acevedo committed to come to our school, but a snow day cancelled that plan unfortunately. Although we were all devastated to not see her speak, I will wildly recommend this QUICK read for my students interested in slam poetry or not. I literally read the entire book in 3 sittings; the story is made up of beautifully crafted poems that engage the reader in Xiomara story of struggle with her strict parents, first love, and understanding her own religion. Each obstacle she embraces with her eloquent words are ones our teens can connect with on so many levels. I can’t wait to get my in the hands of a student (and eventually many)!

Cozi App

For the Fam: I honestly do not think my family unitizes this app to its full potential, but the one aspect I utilize every day is the list function. I am able to make multiple lists: Costco, grocery, Walmart, Target and add to them right on my phone. Although my husband does not check the app as frequently as he should, we are able to share the lists and add so that everyone’s list is covered when we are at our shopping stop. It also has the capabilities for a shared calendar (which syncs to Google calendar), and I know we will use this as our boys get older and our schedules become so much more hectic. There is so much more for my family to explore!

Solo Trader Joes Shopping Trip

For Me: Note the word “SOLO”. I rarely get trips to any store alone, and now that we use Walmart grocery pick-up, we only have a few family trips a month to Costco on Sundays. This past weekend, it was amazing to escape the hustle of the weekend to enjoy checking out all the tasty products Trader Joes has and of course to stock up on some cheap wine and beer. Our local Trader Joe’s had an employee chili cook-off, and they were sampling the winner. It was uniquely Mexican fiesta themed with tamales chopped up; needless to say, I bought all the ingredients and made it for dinner this week. Trader Joes always has fresh new dinner ideas and great products that re-energize my excitement to cook. Although this trip was not the most helpful on my checking account, it sure did soothe the soul and motivate me to try some new recipes.

The Thursday Three – January 16

Silpat Premium Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat

For the Fam: This non-stick baking mat is a lifesaver! I registered for two of these when I got married 5 years ago and have used them since. It is about time to replace, but I know the $20 is well worth the money. I save time on spraying (or not spraying and having to scrub) or foiling my baking sheets. I usually just run it under water and stick it in the dishwasher. I use it for sweets and every kind of vegetable. Anything that goes on my baking sheet goes on top of this for easy cleaning!

Walmart Grocery Pick-up

https://grocery.walmart.com/

For Me: This has been a lifesaver with two young toddlers! No more dreaded grocery store trips! Typically, I plan out our meals for a few days and just add items to the list the night before I want to pick up. I love that the website reminds me of my frequently bought items right before I check out because I generally forget one of them. I know there are many pick-up services but Walmart grocery is conveniently right on my way home from work. The shoppers and carhops are extremely friendly and they don’t accept tips. I have not tried grocery delivery or Instacart, but for now I am just pleased with the convenience of the delivery.

Toddler Electric Toothbrush

https://www.amazon.com/Oral-B-Electric-Toothbrush-Sensitive-Brush/dp/B07XQK6CFD/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=electric%2Btoothbrush%2Bfor%2Bkids&qid=1579141289&sr=8-5&th=1

For the Kids: I can’t find the exact electric toothbrush both my boys received for Christmas, but it’s not necessarily the brand but the novelty of this toothbrush that has made our evening and mornings much smoother. I have not opened the box of my 15 month olds toothbrush, but my 3 year old loves this and NOW brushing his teeth. Certainly a fun gift for his age; I would have never guessed the enjoyment of a toothbrush!

The Thursday Three – January 9

https://www.amazon.com/Where-Crawdads-Sing-Delia-Owens-ebook/dp/B078GD3DRG/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3KEYYCUOPAHHJ&keywords=where+the+crawdads+sing&qid=1578533613&sprefix=where+the+c%2Caps%2C161&sr=8-2

1. FOR ME: As a high school English teacher, I have been on an unfortunate drought of reading for my own pleasure. I brought this book to my English department white elephant exchange (so did someone else) and ended up trading up for my own book (Where The Crawdads Sing) in the end to read over Winter Break.

This was a perfect fast paced read with a complex, lovable main character. With a small town murder and an eccentric Marsh Girl, the plot moves quickly through a series of events that stretches the reader’s mind into unknown beautiful swampy lands and creates questions about the evilness and also kindness of the human race. The unexpected ending left me curious about the author’s commentary on the power of relationships between humans. This is truly one of the best books I read in 2019!

https://www.ymca.net/

2. FOR THE FAM: This favorite is picked because of its proximity to me and isn’t as accessible to everyone as it is to me (it’s one block from our house), but the local YMCA has truly been a lifesaver in my families’ life over the past few years. Having small children comes with a variety of difficulties and finding time to workout whether you stay at home or work is near impossible, but the Y has provided a clean, safe, friendly staff for my boys (1 & 3) to go to while my husband and I work out several days a week for no additional cost with flexible morning and evening hours Monday through Saturday. Before we were members of the Y, we were fans of more boutique workouts that did not have the flexibility of childcare, and if it was available it was expensive on top of the already high price of the workout. The Y has given us a balance of affordable and convenient, but with a great variety of classes that both my husband and I enjoy together. Not only are we happier parents, my 3 year old son has also been enrolled for almost two and half straight years of swim lessons (for a discounted additional price)! We will be pool ready!

https://www.amazon.com/Ravensburger-Disney-Cars-Worldwide-Perfectly/dp/B004H1T13K/ref=sr_1_7?crid=1ZCROF31LJW1Q&keywords=ravensburger+puzzles+for+kids+ages+4-8&qid=1578535115&sprefix=ravensburger+puzzles%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-7

3. FOR THE KIDS: My 3 year old developed a strong addiction for puzzles in November; he is obsessed! Of course, his Christmas gifts were pretty much puzzles from us, Santa, and all grandparents. We have been through about 4-5 other brands in the last two months, and the best ones are the Ravensburger brand. They have a large selection of Disney that can be suitable for any age plus many other themes suitable for any gender and obsession. This 3-puzzle box has small pictures that can easily be put in a plastic bag with pieces to bring along in the diaper bag/purse for a quick ,desperate activity. The puzzles are easy for his small hands to manipulate together but do not fall apart easily. They are perfect for any little puzzle addict!

Another Shot.

Well, here I go again. This is only about the fourth or fifth blog I started in the last decade. From a running blog tracking my marathon training to a teaching a blog to track my first year of teaching; oh yes, I also attempted to write something motivation/thought-provoking in another blog.

So here is another shot at a blog. I hope to share something someone might care about somewhere. Maybe I can spread some mojo around.
